Additional notesSome Questions and Answers people may have regarding the Salisbury Crematorium: WHERE IS THE CREMATORIUM? The Salisbury Crematorium is situated on the North East outskirts of the City, on the A30 London Road. It occupies a site of 6.5 acres, with the grounds laid out as lawns and gardens. It is advisable, if you are not following cortege, to please arrive at the Crematorium no earlier than 5~10 minutes before the scheduled time of the Service. WHAT TYPE OF SERVICE CAN BE HELD? The Chapel at the Crematorium was dedicated for services of any religion or creed. IS IT NECESSARY TO HAVE A RELIGIOUS SERVICE? No; you can, if you wish, just sit quietly for a while; or a family friend could say a few words. A favourite piece of music might also be played. The Cross can be removed if requested. Please let the Funeral Director know if this is your wish. HOW LONG WILL THE SERVICE TAKE? Services at the Crematorium are held every 45 minutes; however, the time allotted for the actual Service is 25 minutes, thus allowing a little time for people to meet following the Service. If you consider a longer Service is needed, or a large attendance is expected, additional time must be booked when making the funeral arrangements. HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN BE SEATED IN THE CHAPEL? There is seating for 100 people. If more than this number are expected to attend, it is strongly recommended that you consider holding the Funeral Service at your local church, followed by a family-only Committal Service at the Crematorium. WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC IS AVAILABLE AT THE CREMATORIUM? The Crematorium has a resident organist to play at each service. Music can be chosen to suit the type service you require. Alternativly, a CD can be played. Recordings should be of good quality and your wishes must be clearly stated. This additional music must be delivered to the Crematorium ONE working day before the service. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE COFFIN DURING THE SERVICE? The coffin is brought into the Chapel and is placed on the catafalque. At the point in the Service when the Committal takes place, the coffin is very slowly lowerered from sight. However, if you prefer, the coffin can remain on the catafalque until you have left the Chapel. Please let the Funeral Directors know your wishes. WHAT ARRANGEMENTS ARE THERE FOR DONATIONS TO BE MADE TO A CHARITY IN LIEU OF FLORAL TRIBUTES? If required, a plate/box for donations can be placed at the back of the Chapel. This should be arranged with the Funeral Director prior to the Service, as all donations collected are the responsibility of the Funeral Director and not the Crematorium. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE CREMATED REMAINS? If it is your wish, the Cremated Remains may be scattered in the Garden of Remembrance, which is in effect the grounds surrounding the Crematorium. However, the Cremated Remains will be held for FOURTEEN DAYS following the cremation in case you change your mind about their final disposal. No records are kept of the exact place where the Cremated Remains are scattered, other than in a general area designated in section 1, 2, 3 or 4. If you so wish, you may select a particular area in the grounds, and arrangements will be made for the Remains to be scattered there: you may of course be present at the scattering if you so desire. Please let the Funeral Director know if this is your wish, and they will arrange a day and time for you to be present. You should consider very carefully what you wish to happen to the Cremated Remains: if you are undecided, we will hold them in Temporary Deposit until you have come to a decision (maximum 3 months). The local Authority has two Cemeteries in its care where special areas are set aside for Cremated Remains; a plot in one of these areas can be purchased and a memorial placed on there. Two interments can be made in this plot. These arrangements can be made by the Funeral Director, on your behalf at a later date. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE FLORAL TRIBUTES? After the Service all the floral tributes which are to remain at the Crematorium are placed on the lower level of the Colonnade with a marker to indicate the name of the departed person for whom they are intended. They will be displayed there for a minimum of 4 days. The Cremation Authority is not responsible for any flowers/floral tributes left at the Crematorium. CAN I BRING FLOWERS TO THE CREMATORIUM AFTER THE SERVICE? Yes ~ cut flowers and pot plants can be brought to the Crematorium at any time, and should be placed along the Colonnade. A selection of vases can be found in a cupboard at the end of the passage. At times when the Crematorium is closed vases will be found alongside the tap on the Colonnade. WHAT TYPES OF MEMORIALS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE CREMATORIUM? Following the Cremation, details of the types of memorials available at the Crematorium will be sent to the person who signed the Application (A) Form for Cremation. Memorials include a Book of Remembrance, Memorial Cards, Bronze and Stone Wall Plaques and Vase Blocks.
